Hiking in Peru Independently vs. Guided Tours
First thing first – you should decide if you will be hiking in Peru independently or if you need to hire a local guide. When it comes to traveling, I typically prefer to travel independently. However, there are times when a guide is necessary or when the logistics of a trip are too complicated for me to handle independently. Luckily, in Peru, most treks can be accomplished with a bit of research, planning, and physical preparation.
This comprehensive Peru trek trails guide can provide you with all the information you require. For the Inca Trail, joining a group tour or hiring a guide may be mandatory. Thankfully, group tours and private guides are reasonably priced in Peru.
It’s crucial to utilize dependable sources and verified tours from companies like GetYourGuide or Viator. Additionally, if you’re planning on hiking during the high season (June to September), it’s best to book several months in advance.

📍 Bring only what you need: The majority of hotels and hostels offer a storage room for free or for a small fee, so you can leave your big backpack with the unnecessary things when you go on multi-day hiking in Peru.
📍 No Cell Phone Service: Cell phones do not work in most places in the backcountry and GPS is sometimes unreliable – Consider carrying a Satellite Phone with Maps and GPS Navigation.
📍 Visa for Peru: The first step for your trip to Peru, you need to understand the Peru Visa requirements- Click here to check the Visa requirements. Get your Peru visa through iVisa if you don’t want to fill out the forms yourself.

10 Top-Rated Peru Hikes
There’s no shortage of fantastic hikes in Peru but there are some trails that stand out above the rest. Below, I’m going to outline the 10 best Peru hikes (in my opinion) to give you an idea of what each one has to offer. That way, you can see which ones are most suitable for you in regards to the time you have, and difficulty.
For more information, you can check out my detailed guide on the most epic Peru Treks! Here, I’ll offer a more detailed description of each hike, so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into!
1. The Inca Trail
The Inca Trail is undeniably one of the most famous hikes in Peru. There are several options when it comes to this trail, but many people opt for the 2-day option. This will allow you more time to explore the rest of the country.
Over 2 days, the Inca Trail covers around 7.7 miles (12.4 km) and is considered moderate in level. It’s located at an altitude of 3,612 feet (1,101 meters) and technically only includes one day of hiking, as you’ll be exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu on day two.
From Ollantaytambo, you’ll take the train to Kilometer 104, and then it’s just a quick stroll to the start of the Trail. Now it’s time to appreciate the impressive views all around you!
2. The Salkantay Trek
Another popular hike in Peru is The Salkantay Trek. It’s considered an alternative to the Inca Trail as it starts at Soraypampa (near Humantay Lake) and will end at the country’s iconic Inca site. Although challenging, this trek is extremely rewarding.
The Salkantay Trek takes 5 days to complete and you’ll be covering a distance of 46 miles (74 km). Along this hike, you may experience altitude sickness, as the highest part of the hike is located at 4,630 meters above sea level. To combat this, make sure you acclimatize before starting the trail and take altitude pills (Diamox).
This hike isn’t as busy as the Inca Trail and you’ll head past glaciers, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and a cloud forest, among the area’s rugged mountains.
3. The Ausangate Trek
The Ausangate Trek is one of the most challenging hikes in Peru. It’s located in the Cusco Region and starts in the small village of Tinqui. On this hike, you’ll head through a remote area of the Andes so it’s recommended to take a guide with you if you’re not experienced.
You’ll be covering a distance of 43 miles (70 km) over 4-5 days and will need to contend with the altitude along the way. The entire route is located over 4,000 meters above sea level, with some of the mountain passes reaching over 5,000 meters.
Along the hike, you’ll get to appreciate a variety of wildlife and there are some awesome highlights to see. This includes Ausangate Lake, Palomanu Pass, Puca Cocha Lake, and Qampa Pass.
4. Huyana Picchu
The Huyana Picchu Trek is one of the most popular hiking routes in the Machu Picchu area. Tickets sell out far in advance for this trail, so you’ll need to reserve your place in advance. This is partly due to the incredible views it offers of the famous Inca Citadel.
At just 1.2 miles (2 km), it’s a very short trail and is regarded as moderate to difficult. There are two routes to choose from; the short trail (which takes 2 hours) and the long trail (4 hours).
Although the views are undeniably impressive, the Huyana Picchu hike isn’t for those who are scared of heights. The trail is extremely steep, and you’ll have to contend with narrow stone steps and sheer drops. Just keep that in mind!
5. Rainbow Mountain
Also known as Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain is another fantastic hiking option. Located in the Peruvian Andes, this stunning mountain boasts a range of colors including blues, greens, purples, and reds. Honestly, it’s a must for any Peru itinerary!
This day hike is only 6.2 miles (10 km) but it typically takes around 3 hours due to the elevation. Rainbow Mountain is located at 5,200 meters above sea level so you’ll want to do this trail slowly. Other than the altitude, it’s actually a really easy hike.
To reach Rainbow Mountain, you’ll need to head on a tour from Cusco. Typically the buses take around 3 hours to reach Vinicunca, and then you’ll have time to complete the hike. Just make sure you’ve acclimatized before you visit.
6. The Moray and Maras Trek
Another popular hike in the Cusco area is the Moray and Maras Trek. You can either hike this trail independently or hire a guide, as you’ll be visiting some of the area’s most popular sites. This way, you’ll be able to learn all about the local area.
The Moray and Maras Trek is an easy trail as you’ll be walking just 4 miles (6 km). It’s also located at 3,400 meters above sea level, which is lower than many of the other hikes in this region. This makes it a great option if you’re not an experienced hiker.
For the full experience, you could always tie this trek in with some other sites. The Sacred Valley has a lot to offer and there are plenty of other places to visit in the area.
7. The Santa Cruz Trek
The Santa Cruz Trek is undeniably one of the best hikes in Peru! It’s the perfect option for those looking to explore the outdoors, as the scenery here will take your breath away. There are two starting points for this hike; Cashpampa or Vaqueria – the choice is yours.
This multi-day trek covers a distance of 31 miles (50 km) and takes 4 days to complete. You’ll need to be physically fit to take on this challenge, especially as the trail is located at 5,100 meters above sea level. This means altitude sickness can be a real problem so you’ll need to acclimatize first before starting this hike.
The best time to do The Santa Cruz Trek is between May to mid-September, as this time of year offers the best weather.
8. The Huayhaush Trek
Another great hiking option is The Huayhaush Trek. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience. The hike starts from Huaraz and will take you through 10 different mountain passes. It’s usually completed as part of an organized tour, as you’ll want a mountain guide with you for this one.
The Huayhaush Trek is 71.5 miles (115 km) long and takes between 8-12 days to complete. It’s extremely challenging and is only suitable for experienced hikers so just keep that in mind. Some of the mountain passes you’ll encounter are at an elevation of 5,100 meters above sea level, meaning this trail is no joke!
However, if you’re up for the challenge, then the views are certainly worth it, especially as you’ll get to visit the famous Tres Lagunas.
9. Colca Canyon
With a depth of 3,270 meters, Colca Canyon is the second-deepest canyon in the world. To experience the best of this place, you’ll want to spend 2-3 days hiking in this area.
Although the distance is only 12.4 miles (20 km), it’s best to split the hike up, especially as you’ll need to walk 1,200 meters down into the canyon. Unfortunately, what goes down must also come up, and this part of the trail won’t be easy.
Take your time at Colca Canyon and keep your eyes peeled for condors as you explore the area. You can either hike this route independently, or many tour operators offer fantastic tours at affordable prices. Just make sure you shop around for the best prices!
10. Misti Volcano
If you’re after a unique hiking experience in Peru then head up Misti Volcano. It’s one of the most accessible high-peaks when it comes to trekking, which makes it a popular option. You’ll find it in the city of Arequipa and it’s located at 5,822 meters above sea level.
To reach the top of Misti Volcano, you’ll need to hike a distance of 15.5 miles (25 km). Although you won’t need to use any special mountaineering equipment, this hike will be a challenge due to the altitude so just take your time. Even relatively fit climbers can reach the summit if they acclimatize and don’t rush the trail.
Although the volcano is active, it’s only erupted four times in the last 500 years.
High Altitude Hiking in Peru
What is considered to be high-altitude hiking?
When it comes to hiking in Peru, it’s important to understand what height is considered to be high altitude. Typically, high altitude is defined as elevations between 8,000 to 12,000 feet (2,438 to 3,658 meters) above sea level.
At these heights, oxygen levels are much lower, which is why we can suffer from altitude sickness. It’s our body struggling to get used to the lack of oxygen, and it can take some getting used to! That’s why acclimatization is so important, so you’ll need to spend time getting your body used to the new altitude before you attempt any sort of hike.
Then there are elevations over 12,000 feet, and Peru has many treks that are located at this altitude. To give you an idea of how high this is, Everest Base Camp is located at 17,600 feet (5,364 meters) above sea level.
Hikes at this altitude require more preparation and extensive training, so you’ll want to keep that in mind!
How to prepare yourself for high-altitude hiking?
If you have hiked at high altitudes before, you already know that it brings some challenges and difficulties, and it affects everybody differently. As such, it’s important to be prepared so that you can enjoy Peru’s hikes, rather than suffer from altitude sickness.
In my opinion, It’s very important that you follow a training program for high altitudes before your trip. You’ll also want to understand the effects of high altitude, so you can recognize them. This will allow you to make the right decision when you have symptoms which can be:
- Lack of appetite
- Constant headaches
- Tiring very quickly
- Breathlessness with minor exertion
Once you arrive at altitude, take a day or two to give your body time to rest and adjust. After acclimatizing for a few days, these symptoms should diminish greatly, if not disappear. If you still need help, you can always take a high-altitude pill. Just make sure you do your research on these first.
The most important thing to do if you have any symptoms – Rest and drink plenty of water!
Best Time to Go Hiking in Peru
Regardless of winter or summer, the temperatures in Peru generally stay very stable within its distinct regions. The highlands near Machu Picchu will often hover around the 70s F, while the jungle will see temperatures from the high 80s to the low 90s F
- NOVEMBER TO MARCH (WET SEASON): With fewer crowds and greener scenery, but also, an increase in rainfall. January to February tends to be the wettest months.
- OCTOBER AND APRIL (SHOULDER SEASON): The most unpredictable weather in Peru is in October and April. With blue skies, but also rain clouds.
- MAY TO SEPTEMBER (DY SEASON): Wintertime in Peru, and also, the driest and most pleasant time of the year, especially for hiking in Peru.
Peru Hiking Packing Essentials
When picking out your wardrobe to go trekking in Peru, it’s best to consider the following points.
If you’re visiting Peru during wintertime, it’ll likely be sunny and hot. If you’re visiting during summer, you can expect humid heat with a fair amount of rain. In both cases, you are almost certainly guaranteed some annoying bug action!
Therefore, your best hiking clothing will feature lightweight long-sleeve and long pants that are breathable and moisture-wicking. These will help protect you from sun and bugs alike, but also keep you cooler on hot days and dry quickly if you get caught in the rain.
To make it easier for you, I have listed some must-pack items for your hiking in Peru:
- Backpack: If you are planning to carry a backpack during your hiking, I have compiled a very detailed review of the Best Backpacks for Travel in the market today.
- Portable water bottle: Remember to bring and drink a lot of water and if you need to refill, a LifeStraw Filtered Water Bottle is the best option.
- First-aid kit: Always remember to pack a first-aid kit for your hikes.
- Headlamps: Carry a flashlight or headlamp even on a day hike. If you have trouble on the trail, darkness may fall before you can finish your hike.
- Wear sturdy shoes for hiking: The most important thing is to protect your feet and avoid twisting your ankle and getting injured. I recommend investing in a good hiking boots brand such as Teva, Salomon, or even Keens. You can also check out these epic hiking boots under $100.
- Moisture-wicking clothing: These clothes help to pull the sweat away from your body and stay cool and dry during your hiking such as light hiking pants & long sleeves shirts.
- Warm Layers: Early morning or late night can get cold so it is important to bring layers, a lightweight puffy jacket is a must!
- Hiking Leggings: Another great item for your hikes is to invest in a good pair of leggings for hiking.
- Packing for winter hiking: During winter make sure to have a good quality hiking jacket and pack a warm pair of pants for your hike.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses: It is always important to protect yourself against the sun. Bring a hat with a good face cover like this one and don’t forget to pack a pair of polarized sunglasses
- Bring along some food or snacks: It’s a good idea to pack high-energy food for hiking
- Bring your Camera: You will see some incredible views during your hiking, so don’t forget your camera, or check out some great value options here.
Make sure you pack accordingly! You can click on any of the following item pictures to be taken to their pages and see prices and details.
How to Get Around Peru
In most cases, especially when planning a hiking trip to Peru unguided, you’ll need some form of transportation. Let’s review the options for transportation in Peru:
TAXI 🚖: Taxis in Peru are absolutely cheap. Nearly every street you visit will feature at least a few taxis all honking or flashing their lights to get your attention, and you can use them for getting around easily.
BUSES 🚎 : For traveling in Peru from one city to another, colectivos (minivan buses) and full-sized buses are your most economical choice. They’re direct, they’re cheap, and you can tell the driver exactly where you want to get off.
RENTAL CAR 🚗: While certainly a more expensive option, private cars do provide some peace of mind for getting around Peru. Especially when the transportation system is a bit of an adventure on its own. If you are planning to rent a car in Peru, I recommend requesting a quote and comparing prices from different car providers to get the best deal.
Best Flights to Peru
If you’re flying to Peru from the U.S., you’ll almost certainly have to fly to Lima (LIM), or Cusco (CUZ) airports. Here are the major airlines currently flying from North America to Peru:

Peru Hiking Conclusion
As you can see there are plenty of Peru hiking opportunities, which makes this country the perfect destination for keen hikers! Whether you’re a beginner or you have plenty of experience, there are lots of different trails for you to choose from.
Some of the hiking trails only require a day, while there are multi-day trails that can take you up to 12 days. Each route will differ in duration, elevation, and difficulty, so just keep that in mind when planning your trip. You’ll also want to consider whether you’d like to hike on your own, or if you need the experience of a mountain guide (the latter is often the best option, especially in a new country).
I’d also recommend making sure you’ve got quality gear and keeping altitude sickness tablets on you, just in case.
