Clearwater offers breathtaking views of the sparkling Gulf of Mexico which is lined with charming shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. No matter what spot you choose, you’ll always find plenty of amenities close by – including a large playground the kids will love right at the base of Pier 60.

A popular and fun activity here is to join the dolphin-watching cruise or try your hand at various water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding, or jet skiing. And of course, no trip to Clearwater Beach is complete without visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. And don’t forget to try the local specialty, the grouper sandwich at Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill, which is a true culinary delight, and one of my favorite dishes!

Now let me share with you my personal favorite warm winter spot in the USA where normally I escape every year. With plenty of things to do on Anna Maria Island all year long, this is a perfect winter gateway for everyone.

Anna Maria Island Beaches are all stunning. Besides Manatee Beach, while visiting Anna Maria Island you can visit many other stunning beaches such as Coquina Beach, Bayfront Park Beach, Holmes Beach, Bean Point Beach, and Bradenton Beach. They all offer crystal-clear waters, warm sands, and family-friendly amenities.

It is also a short drive from Tampa or a 2.5-hour drive from Orlando, Anna Maria is a perfect destination to add to your family vacation. Anna Maria also offers amazing culinary variety. If you love fresh seafood, great service, and beautiful views overlooking the pier and the Skyway Bridge you have to dine at the Waterfront Restaurant.

St. Augustine is known as the oldest city in the US, having been founded in the 1500s. The quaint town still maintains that old Spanish feel with cobblestone streets, trees brimming with Spanish moss, and amazing architecture in the historic buildings.

And the town goes all out during winter- beginning on Thanksgiving weekend and lasting through January, St. Augustine celebrates with the “Nights of Lights”. Millions of lights and decorations hang from every hotel, building, lamp post, and tree in the historic downtown area. Thousands of visitors come from all over the country each year to celebrate the holidays.

The town also offers amazing cuisine, and you can choose one of St. Augustine’s amazing local restaurants serving fresh fish, shrimp, and crab caught right out of the ocean.

While easily accessible from the Los Angeles area, once you take a ferry to Catalina, it will feel like you’re on a true island getaway. The winter weather on Catalina Island averages around 60°F during the day and in the mid-40s at night.

The ferry will drop you off at either Avalon or Two Harbors, but Avalon is the main destination, as it is the only actual city on the island. Check out the Catalina Casino, a historic landmark featuring the Avalon Theatre, and stroll along Front Street to peruse local shops and restaurants. Two Harbors is a tiny secluded town that makes the perfect home base for snorkeling, scuba diving, glass-bottom boat tours, and other outdoor activities.

One of the coolest things to do on Catalina Island is to backpack the Trans-Catalina Trail, which circumnavigates the whole island. It takes about 3-4 days to hike the entire trail, and along the way, you will experience incredible views, savor amazing beach sunsets, and possibly even catch a glimpse of the herd of buffalo that roam the island.

 If you choose to take on the Trans-Catalina Trail, you’ll find several campgrounds along the way where you can sleep under the stars. Other things you cannot miss are visiting the iconic Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier, and Griffith Observatory without battling frigid weather. Immerse yourself in art at the Getty Center or explore the bustling Farmers Market.

You can also hire a private guide to drive you to the Beverly Hills Celebrity Homes – I know it sounds a little cheesy, but I have to confess that I drove there on my first visit to Los Angeles, and I had fun “hunting” for the amazingly rich and famous mansions.

Not to mention, there are plenty of things to do!

For instance, you can spend hours upon hours sunbathing, swimming, or surfing at several of the beaches. Or, if you prefer to admire the views of the coastline from up above, you can go hiking. There are a few different easy-to-moderate trails around Torrey Pines Nature Reserve. And if you’re up for a fun adventure, you can go on a wine-tasting excursion to a famous wine region nearby!

With regards to places to stay, one place worth checking out is Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine, located in La Jolla Shores. Here, you can take in the picturesque ocean view and enjoy a pleasant stay away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Diego!

8. Savannah, Georgia

December is the best time to visit Savannah GA for sightseeing, due to the low humidity, mild weather (typically), and beautiful holiday decor. Winter temperatures average around 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night and 65 during the day. January is the coldest month of the year, but the azaleas often begin blooming as early as mid-February.

It has been an important port city dating to colonial times and is full of fascinating history and lovely charm. Winters on South Carolina’s coast are usually very mild and include plenty of days with sunshine and short sleeve weather, making it perfect for escaping from colder weather elsewhere.

Visitors can walk along the narrow historic streets while taking in the lovely architecture of places like the iconic Rainbow Row. Walking down King Street to see more historic buildings while popping into the countless charming boutique shops and restaurants, or walk through the City Market to see more unique handmade goods and treats.

History buffs should head out to Fort Sumter, the site of the start of the Civil War, and to Fort Moultrie on nearby Sullivan’s Island, the site of one of the first engagements of the War for Independence. Patriot’s Point also is home to the USS Yorktown WWII era aircraft carrier and several other historic ships.

Finally, there are several great Charleston beaches within a half-hour vicinity of the city. Folly Beach is the most popular. The water might still be a bit chilly to enjoy a swim, but taking in the scenery while walking along the beach and perhaps sticking your toes in is the perfect way to enjoy a sunny day. You also have the option to join a private sailing cruise to catch the beautiful sights.

When visiting San Antonio try the local Tex-Mex cuisine – it’s an absolute must when you are here! There are lots of restaurants offering delicious food, my favorite being Mi Tierra Café y Panaderia – famous for its margaritas and mariachis!

⭐ INSIDER TIP: Stay in a hotel near the River Walk area for easy access to entertainment and dining options. Mokara Hotel is a great accommodation option situated right on the Riverwalk with a heated outdoor rooftop pool and stunning city views!

12. Austin, Texas

When planning a warm weather getaway in the winter, Austin, Texas is sure to be the best option with beautiful outdoor scenery, an incredible number of fun things to do, and warm weather. Austin is an outdoor lover’s paradise, and the mild warm weather allows visitors to experience it all without the intense heat of the summer sun. Average winter temperatures have a daily high in the mid-60s with overnight lows in the 40s.

Austin provides many trails and paths that are perfect for walking and biking throughout the city. The Ann and Roy Butler Trail follows Lady Bird Lake through town with a touch of nature. McKinney Falls State Park provides beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls. 

Stroll over the Congress Avenue Bridge for iconic views of the city. The Capitol provides free walking tours giving a taste of Texas history. A self-guided walking tour of Austin’s street art is the perfect way to capture some colorful photos. Zilker Park is perfect for a picnic and renting a kayak.

Music lovers will want to plan their Austin winter getaway in the month of January when the Free Week Music Festival is hosted by the Red River District. All shows are free! This event is an amazing way to see the talent that makes up this city.

If visiting in December, don’t miss the holiday light show at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters! Free reservations are required, so plan ahead.

Don’t miss the Scottsdale Rodeo Museum or Western Spirit. At the latter, exhibits cover both the history of the region and its art. For outdoor lovers, take a hike among the cacti at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Some of the best hikes in the Phoenix area include Piestawa Peak, the Wave Cave, the Peralta trail to Fremont Saddle, and the Echo Canyon trail at Camelback. 

Visit the Desert Botanical Garden where you can see thousands of species of flowers, cacti, and plants all year long. Papago Park is also another great outdoor place to explore while not straying far from the city. There are hiking trails in the park as well as fishing and golfing. 

Be sure to watch the sunset at Lost Dutchman State Park, one of the best views in the Phoenix area. Another way to catch the best views of the Sonoran Desert is to go on an exhilarating hot air balloon ride. The glow of the Superstition Mountains cannot be beaten! Whether you’re hiking, enjoying the area’s amazing Mexican food, or just feeling the warm air on your skin- Phoenix makes an awesome winter vacation!

⭐ INSIDER TIP: I’ve visited Arizona many times and the last time I went I stayed at Saguaro Lake Ranch, located about 30 minutes from downtown Phoenix. This place feels like a nature retreat, with amazing views of the mountains and cacti. There is limited service and Wi-fi, so this is a place you can go to really unwind in nature. They also serve an amazing complimentary breakfast every morning.

15. Page, Arizona

The city itself has many attractions, such as Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, Glen Canyon Dam, and the Antelope Canyon, that can provide you with hours of exploration, stunning sunsets, and breathtaking scenery.

Antelope Canyon sits on Navajo land and is a natural slot canyon that was formed by erosion due to the flow of water over millions of years. Its intricate walls are an amazing sight to behold, and exploring it can provide great memories. You must use a guide to tour the canyons, and they do an awesome job of helping you take the best photos.

Plus, the great thing about Page Arizona is that it’s close to several national parks including Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park. So it can easily be used as a hub to take day trips to and from. 

⭐ INSIDER TIP: If you are planning to go hike the Antelope Canyon I recommended to book in advance, and choosing to go hiking during mid-day. This will pay off with extraordinary sights as the sun shines through the sandstone shafts, illuminating the canyon’s gold and orange walls.
