Warm Winter Vacations in the USA: NATIONAL PARKS
24. Big Bend National Park, Texas
☀️ Average Winter Weather: Winters generally experience daily lows around 35°F and highs around 65°F
🏨 Where to Stay: Camp Elena – Luxury Tents (⭐8.8)
Big Bend National Park is one of the most incredibly warm winter vacations in the USA for adventurous travelers that love to hike and camp. Due to its remote location, Big Bend is one of the least visited National Parks therefore this is the perfect location if you’re looking to escape the crowds and have an amazing outdoor experience.
Big Bend offers some incredible views and hiking trails in the Chisos Mountain range and an all-natural FREE hot spring in the Rio Grande. Relax in the hot spring, and jump in the river whenever you need to cool off. Lastly, Big Bend’s night sky is sure to blow your mind! Step out and admire the stars on your trip for at least one night.
The average temperature throughout the winter months peaks in the 60s and you can guarantee almost no rain! While the nights dip into the 40’s you’ll have plenty of sunshine and warm temps during your days to explore.
⭐ INSIDER TIP: Camping right in the park is the way to do your Big Bend trip! A campsite is extremely affordable at less than $20 for a 14-night stay and you get a huge primitive campsite all to yourself. If you’d prefer a hotel, check out Chisos Mountains Lodge in the park.
25. Joshua Tree National Park, Arizona
☀️ Average Winter Weather: 45°F to 60°F | 7°C to 15°C
🏨 Where to Stay: 28 Palms Ranch (⭐9.3)
Now this should be on top of your warm winter vacations in the USA! The winter months make an excellent time to visit California’s Joshua Tree National Park. The heat has died down so hiking and sightseeing are comfortable and cool, with all the trails and overlooks still open. The average high temperature in Joshua Tree during the winter months is 60 degrees F during the day with nights in the 30s.
The park typically sees fewer visitors during the winter months as well, so you can ditch the crowds behind, making it one of the best warm winter vacations in the USA for outdoor lovers!
The best hikes in Joshua Tree include the trail to Heart Rock and Skull Rock. The park also has ample rock climbing opportunities. A sunset at Key’s View and a sunrise at the Cholla Cactus Garden are not to be missed. The stargazing at Joshua Tree is incredible, and during the winter months, you don’t have to stay up as late for the stars to come out!
While in town, eat at Crossroads Cafe for breakfast, lunch, or dinner for twists on diner classics. Plus, they’ve got vegan options. Or check out JT Country Kitchen for great breakfast burritos!
⭐ INSIDER TIP: You’ll also get cheaper lodging during the winter months. To fully immerse yourself in nature, consider glamping in a yurt at the 28 Palms Ranch. You’ll have mountain views during the day, and at night you can look up through the glass windows cut out for stargazing from the yurts!
26. Death Valley National Park
☀️ Average Winter Weather: 50°F to 65°F | 10°C to 18°C
🏨 Where to Stay: The Inn At Death Valley (⭐8.2)
Last but not least on this amazing list of the top warm winter vacations in the USA, it is Death Valley National Park. Well, considering visiting anytime during the summer may kill you, visiting death valley in the winter can at least guarantee you’ll leave in one piece. All jokes aside (NOTE: Actually, please be very careful if you visit Death Valley when it’s over 110), Death Valley in the winter is gorgeous.
You can hike all day; the stars above shine brighter than most other locations in California, and sunsets and sunrises burnt bright. It’s truly a remarkable place to visit during the winter months. I recommend spending three days here, which will allow you to see almost everything there is to see in the park.
The best things to do here are hiking (please wear appropriate clothing), enjoying the night sky, cycling, camping, and sightseeing. Weather can fluctuate, but expect temperatures in the 60s/70s and lows in the 40’s. Remember, despite being the desert, lows can still drop below what you desire.
There is little for guided tours, but the park is easy to get around, and most of the main attractions (Badwater Basin, Golden Canyon, Artists Pallete, and Mesquite Sand Dunes) are off the main road.
⭐ INSIDER TIP: If you’re opting to stay in a hotel (only a few are nearby, and be ready to shell out some cash), The Inn At Death Valley is a great choice.
